Data Management Planning – Theory and practice (held in English) 2. 11. 2022

RNDr. Michal Růžička, Ph.D.

Data are the foundation of the current research. The proper management of data starts to be an essential skill for researchers. More and more research funding agencies insist on preparing and submitting a Data Management Plan (DMP) as part of the project proposal for funding. Having FAIR Data – data that is (F)indable, (A)ccessible, (I)nteroperable, and (R)eusable – is a more and more common requirement as well as verifiability and repeatability of the scientific findings and experiments, which depends heavily on the used data.

To be successful with your research, you should be aware of the lifecycle of your data: What data you are (re)using (including licensing allowing you to do so), what data you generate and how, where you store them, back them up, store them for the long term, how you persistently and uniquely identify them, process them, analyse them, where you publish and share them, who will pay for all these data handlings; what the data really is about, for what the data is suitable and for what it is not, who can reuse the data, what particular data supports your results, how to use them to repeat your experiments etc.

In this seminar, we will discuss research data management in general. Then, more specifically, what DMP could be – yet another bureaucratic document in the pile of sheets of the project proposal papers –, and what DMP you really want to be for you – a handy overview of data you work with.

DMP should be a living document helping you keep an overview of your data. Proper DMP tools can help you not only prepare and maintain up-to-date documentation for the project proposal / final report but also help you measure how your data is to the FAIR attributes. In the seminar, we will demonstrate the preparation of DMP with the DMP tool Data Stewardship Wizard.

Open Science – Current status and emerging trends (held in English) 9. 11. 2022

Mgr. Ing. Jiří Marek

The seminar will present the current state of Open Science and its impact on the research environment, specifically on the scientific research activity itself. Participants will be introduced to the general principles of Open Science and to specific sub-areas that this concept includes. The seminar will also introduce support options for Masaryk University researchers in this area.

Co (ne)funguje při učení 23. 11. 2022

Mgr.

Ph.D. grant landscape and beyond (held in English) 30. 11. 2022

Mgr. Jakub Zeman

Grant agenda for Ph.D. students and how to get ready for the main opportunities beyond the Ph.D.

Your Ph.D. graduation is approaching, you start thinking about your professional future. What options are there for you? What are your career dreams and fears? And have you ever seen or written a grant application, or even implemented a grant? What do you need to know to be able to prepare a grant application? And (why) should you care, at all?

Individual grant opportunities for Ph.D. students are scarce. The nature of aspiring researchers’ involvement in the world of grant funding is different. They should actively seek opportunities to get engaged in grant activities of their mentors, or other senior researchers, both at the stage of grant proposal preparation and project implementation. Getting familiar with grant agenda should be an essential part of Ph.D. education, especially for those who want to pursue an academic career, but also for those aspiring to a career outside academia. So do you already have you grant proposal idea on your mind, or on paper? And do you know where and why you should apply?
