Our guide will help you to get to the relevant resource.
The library collection is sorted by call numbers, i.e. codes of numbers and letters that classify literature theme-wise. The manner of classifications varies depending on whether it is a book, a journal, a map or other type of document.
Books in open stacks are searched by call numbers with subject matching colours. Red stripe down on a book spine stands for Physics, dark blue is for Maths, light blue for Anthropology, green for Geology and Geography and yellow for General Collection. See the number code 53 for Physics, 51 for Maths, 572 for Anthropology, 55 for Geology and Geography, with General Collection having various codes. Numbers are followed by first letters of the author’s surname or the title. Books are arranged according to the codes first, and then alphabetized within each category.
If there is a note stating “Vyžádejte u knihovníka studovny věd o Zemi“ in the catalogue, ask a librarian for assistance.
Journals are alphabetized at the back of the Physics, Maths and Earth Sciences study rooms. Each journal is assigned an alphabetical code consisting of the collection indicator and first letters of the title. Earth Sciences journals are marked VZ, M is for Maths and F for Physics. Anthropology journals are marked 572.6 and alphabetized. Issues are arranged in ascending order.
Find a thesis according to its call number, an alphabetical code consisting of K, collection indicator, release year and first letters of the author's surname. See K-VZ for the Earth Sciences theses, K-M for Maths and K-F for Physics. Theses are located at the front of the study room, where they are arranged according to the year of release and alphabetized.
Find maps via the Library Catalogue either by title or call number. You can find maps in the Earth Sciences study room (second floor). Some maps are located in the closed stacks and are available upon request in the library catalogue.
Example:
Look at the map sheet index (by Czech Geological Survey) and find the corresponding map in the Library Catalogue. Write down the call number and request the map at the Earth Sciences study room (second floor).

You can access the licensed e-resources of Masaryk University through the EIR Portal.
Students, academics, MU staff and library users have access to subscription e-resources from MU buildings or via remote access.
You can search for individual resources in the EIR Portal by title, faculty or subject. Not every faculty provides access to all resources. You can find out which resources you can access within your faculty by sorting. On the main page click on Resources Overview Resource by faculty. Select your faculty and you will see a list sorted alphabetically with a brief description of what is in that resource. If you do not know the appropriate databases specifically for your discipline, you can search by discipline.
